Who was Legendary Jaswant Singh Gill?
Jaswant Singh Gill was born in Sathiala, Amritsar, on November 22, 1937. In 1959, he completed his studies and obtained his diploma from Khalsa College. He was hailed as a national hero for his remarkable rescue of 65 men from a buried coal mine.
On the horrible day of November 13, 1989, a disaster struck the Mahabir Colliery in Raniganj, West Bengal. Miners worked tirelessly, setting off explosives to extract coal. The underlying water table, which was perilously near to where they were working, cracked under immense force, releasing a torrent of water.
As the cave-ins began, panic ensued, putting the lives of 220 miners in jeopardy. Six brave souls died soon after, while 65 more remained confined, awaiting their fate.
Engineer Jaswant Singh Gill emerged as a beacon of hope in the midst of the frantic race against time, with traditional rescue operations failing. Gill suggested drilling a well and deploying a specially designed steel rescue capsule on the location. Gill eventually emerged from the pit’s bottom after all 65 trapped miners were released using a crane.
President Ramaswamy Venkataraman gave the engineer the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak for his bravery in 1991. A chowk on Majitha Road in Amritsar was also named after him. Gill died on November 26, 2019, leaving a wife and four children behind. Parineeti Chopra, Kumud Mishra, Pavan Malhotra, Ravi Kishan, Varun Badola, and Dibyendu Bhattacharya are also featured in “Mission Raniganj.”
