Killers of the Flower Moon Plot
In his book “Killers of the Flower Moon,” author and journalist David Grann provides a meticulously documented narrative of a lesser-known yet profoundly impactful period in American history: the Osage Reign of Terror. This dark chapter, officially acknowledged as spanning from 1921 to 1926, witnessed the brutal murders of over twenty Osage Indians who were ruthlessly targeted for their lucrative oil wealth. By the early 1920s, the Osage were the richest people in the nation per individual.
The tribe’s reservation, located outside of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, was once home to one of the greatest oil deposits in the nation. Under tribal law, each member of the tribe was granted a head right, or a share of the mineral trust.
However, in the majority of these cases, the government declared the Osage to be “incompetent” and made them into guardianships, where their white neighbors were given responsibility over the overflowing accounts and they were unable to manage their own finances. Many white Americans grew outraged at hearing sensationalized stories about the Osage tribe’s wealth, and many residing in the cities surrounding the Osage reservation attempted to wipe out Osage members by coercion, violence, and outright evil in order to acquire their wealth.
The novel focuses on a federal agent’s inquiry into the killings and the victims’ family members, who must deal with the fallout from a massive plot involving the FBI, a wealthy family, and both parties.
