The film premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2023, and received positive reviews from critics, who praised its humor, heart, and performances. It is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 17, 2023, by Searchlight Pictures.

Some of the main plot points and themes of the film are:

The film begins with a flashback of American Samoa’s 31-0 loss to Australia in the 2001 FIFA World Cup qualification, the greatest defeat in international soccer history.

The American Samoa Football Association hired Thomas Rongen, a former professional soccer player and coach, to lead their national team during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification in 2011. He comes to Pago Pago with his wife Gail and meets the team, which is made up of amateur players, some of whom work as teachers, fishermen, or soldiers during the day.

Rongen is first dissatisfied by the team’s lack of finances, facilities, and skills, and he argues with some of the players, particularly the captain, Tavita. He also finds it difficult to adjust to the local culture and norms, such as the value of family, faith, and respect.

Rongen gradually bonds with the team, particularly with Jaiyah Saelua, a fa’afafine (a third-gender person who identifies as female) and the first transgender player to play in a World Cup match. He also learns about the players’ personal tales and struggles, such as Nicky Salapu, the goalie who was shaken by the 31-0 loss, and Daru Taumua, an injured soldier in Afghanistan.

Rongen teaches the team new tactics and techniques while instilling confidence and pride in them. He also schedules a friendly match against a local high school team, in which the national team wins 3-1, their first victory ever.

The team will compete in the first round of World Cup qualification at Apia, Samoa. In their maiden encounter, they meet Tonga and score their first official goal, thanks to a penalty kick by Ramin Ott. They went on to win the game 2-1, their first official victory. The squad rejoices and weeps as they accept congratulations from their family and fans.

In their second encounter, the team defeats the Cook Islands 2-0, due to goals from Shalom Luani and Jaiyah. They have qualified for the second round of qualification, which is a remarkable achievement for them.

In their third and last match in the first round, the team fell 1-0 to Samoa, thanks to a contentious penalty kick awarded to Samoa. The crew is still proud of their performance, and Rongen commends them for their bravery and energy.

The film concludes with a montage of the team’s trip to the second round of qualification, where they face tougher opponents like New Caledonia, Tahiti, and Vanuatu.

They lost all six games, but scored two more goals, earning the soccer world’s respect and affection.

The film also depicts the influence of the team’s success on the lives of the players and the people of American Samoa, such as Jaiyah becoming a role model for the LGBTQ+ community, Daru returning to his family and healing from his injuries, and Nicky coming to terms with his past.
