Pippa is a Bollywood film inspired by Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta‘s genuine experience during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. Who is Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta?
One of the earliest tank battles of the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War was the Battle of Garibpur, which retired Indian Army commander Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta fought. His memoir, The Burning Chaffees: A Soldier’s First-Hand Account of the 1971 War, is a book he published about his experiences. Prior to the official declaration of the Indo-Pak War on December 3, 1971, India and Pakistan engaged in combat on November 20–21, 1971, over control of the village of Garibpur, which is now in Bangladesh. In one of the most significant battles of the Bangladesh Liberation War, two infantry battalions and a squadron of M24 Chaffee tanks from Pakistan were successfully repelled by a lone Indian infantry battalion, 14 Punjab (Nabha Akal), with the aid of artillery and a PT-76 tank squadron from 45 Cavalry.
Six Pakistani tanks were destroyed in the fight, while three more were taken prisoner. The Indian side lost two tanks and sustained seventy fatalities. Along with providing support for the Indian advance towards Jessore, the battle also raised the spirits of the Mukti Bahini, the Bengali freedom fighters, and the Indian army.
