Because a major twist in the novel is completely eliminated in the film, the ending appears calm and unconvincing. This may have worked if the screenplay had appropriately led up to the major scene, but it doesn’t. It’s boring for both those who have and haven’t read the novel. The VFX in the scene shortly before the credits, encapsulating the Chola empire’s expansion, is tacky and should have been better for a film of this scale.

- Mani Ratnam considered Mahesh Babu and Thalapathy Vijay for the parts of Arunmozhi Varman and Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan, respectively, when casting Ponniyin Selvan in 2019.
